| The Veterinary Transfusion Center is a non-profit volunteer blood donor program for animals with the goal of providing life-saving blood products to dogs and cats of San Antonio and the surrounding areas at minimal expense.
Blood donors should be healthy, indoor pets with a good preventative health program monitored by a local veterinarian. Dogs and cats should be between
1 and 8 years of age with dogs weighing at least 50 pounds and cats weighing at least 10 pounds.Donors should have a good temperament and tolerate light restraint well. In addition, donors cannot have been transfusion recipients in the past.
Once a potential donor’s history and current health status have been verified, the center will arrange an initial screening session including: testing the pet’s temperament and general health, drawing a small blood sample for blood typing, and screening for infectious diseases.
Once donors are accepted to the program, they will be placed on the active donor list. Donors may be called to donate no more than once every 2 months and will remain active for no longer than 2 yearsContact us to fill out a donor questionnaire if you have an interest to participate:
