Animal Emergency Room
24-hour emergency and urgent veterinary care

Animal Emergency Room Services

Our primary concern at Animal Emergency Room is the welfare of your pet. We provide the highest level of veterinary care available.

From Allergic reactions to Zoonotic diseases, AER can help you with your pet's health concerns.

Diagnostic capabilities at AER include and in-house lab for blood work, fecal exam, coagulation profile, urinalysis, and microscopy. Our X-ray unit is used for imaging of bones and soft-tissues (including barium contrast series).

Our facility and staff is prepared to diagnose and treat all urgent medical conditions of pets including trauma, infectious disease, toxicities, bite injuries, geriatric and neonatal disorders, vomiting and diarrhea, and many others.  We also perform many emergency surgeries, including C-section, foreign body removal, laceration repair, ocular emergency, and others.

Many of our veterinarians treat exotic species.  Since non-traditional species require special knowledge, we recommend you call to inquire if the veterinarian on duty can see your pet.

We work directly with all of the local San Antonio and surrounding veterinarians.

Examination

Any visit to the Animal Emergency Room begins with a complete Physical Examination. This is the key to properly assessing the proper care your companion needs. The physical exam consists of the doctor physically evaluating the condition of the patient assessing the vital signs, overall attitude, internal palpation, and cardiac interpretation. After conducting an exam, the doctor is able to provide recommendations to further treat the specific needs of your pet.

Laboratory

In the unfortunate event your pet is injured or becomes ill, our specially designed treatment area consists of an in-house laboratory equipped with the necessary equipment to perform complete internal diagnostic evaluations of your pet. This state of the art equipment helps our doctors diagnose and monitor the most difficult health problems including, but not limited to:

  • Heart disease

  • Liver and Kidney disease

  • Diabeties

  • Organ Failure

  • Infection

  • Dehydration

  •  Blood gas levels

  • Clotting times

  • Anemia

These state-of-the-art instruments greatly enhance internal visibility.

Diagnostics

To compliment our laboratory and further assist our doctors with internal visibility, we have expanded our diagnostic capabilities with a number of other resources. The Animal Emergency Room has the ability to perform both in-house Radiology and Ultrasonography. As well, we can evaluate our sickest of patients utilizing equipment to asses a variety of the same information human emergency rooms calculate including:

  • Oxygen saturation (SPO2)

  • Heart performance (ECG)

  • Two types of blood pressure

  • Heart rate

  • Body temperature

  • End tidal CO2

These abilities assist our staff in diagnosing and monitoring the most critical of illnesses and conditions.

Supportive Therapy

As an Emergency room, a big part of what we do is intensive care and supportive therapy. Our highly trained staff utilizes both the Laboratory and Diagnostic capabilities of the practice to track any changes our patients go through while in our care. To improve our supportive and ICU care, the Animal Emergency Room uses a combination of current available medications, Oxygen therapy, Temperature regulation, Vital sign monitoring, and Controlled IV Fluid therapy. This allows us to give the very best care available for the needs of our patients.

Surgery

An important part of emergency care is the ability to perform surgery when necessary. The Animal Emergency Room hospital has a fully equipped surgical suite which allows us to treat both orthopedic and soft tissue conditions. Our surgical suite is equipped with a full spectrum Vital Signs Monitor and uses Isoflurane gas anesthesia to greatly reduce the risk of any procedure.

Blood Products

Just as important as the need for donated human blood is the need for donated animal blood. Our animal companions are susceptible to the same potential trauma and many of the same diseases which require the need for a blood transfusion as part of treatment. Select the Veterinary Transfusion Center tab above to read more about our non-profit blood donation center and decide if your companion can participate in helping to save the animals of San Antonio.
